It depends on the essay style you have been asked to follow because the rules can differ slightly.

My suggestion would be to google the style guidelines. For example, by googling "MLA attributions" I came up with this reference:

http://www.unc.edu/depts/wcweb/handouts/mla.html

My personal preference according to these guidelines would be to structure my sentence:

According to Rosamond Mitchell and Florence Myles in their book, "Second Language Learning Theories
Second Edition,"

The bibliography should include:

Book

Author's Last Name, First Name. Book Title. Place of Publication: Publisher, Date.

In the text I'd say ...according to Mitchell and Myles (1999), and in the reference list would say
Mitchell, [his initial],. & Myles, [initial] 1999. [the title of their story]

You should avoid abbreviations in the text of the essay, so use "and". The bibliography (or refrence list or list of citations) will vary depending on the format you have been assigned to use. In general, though, abbreviations are allowed in notes and bibliographies, but not in main text.
