Hear, believe, confess, repent, be baptized - and live faithfully.
For many fundamentalist Christians I know at least - those are the six steps to salvation. (EDIT: See Kenny P's answer above)
But in the Christian faith itself - there is much dispute on baptism and its role in our salvation - infant baptism, sprinkling, full water immersion, etc.
One of the earliest scriptural examples of baptism was recorded in Acts Chapter 8 - after Phillip had been teaching the Ethiopian Eunuch who said, "Here is water! Why shouldn't I be baptized now?" (Acts 8:37)

This is the perfect resource for you... Gospel Enigma: and the Young Heretics. It covers this confusing subject of baptism in great detail and with a great deal of humor... and I can promise you that it is very informative.
It's at the top of the list here... and a free read of course.

I think you are smart to see through the lies of such false religions.
Check out what they tell you with what the bible really teaches, I think you sound smart enough to work out the truth from the lies.
Many churches will bend to you so as to get another member rather than bother with the truth.

Baptism symbolizes your dedication to do God's will. Jesus set the example for his followers by being baptized, so if you want to follow Jesus, you should be baptized.
And yes,God's word is more valid then man's word.

Read Matthew 10 I believe it is about forgiveness. That's what being saved is all about, if you can't forgive others for their sins against you, then you can't be forgiven for your own sins.

Baptism is the act of showing your faith in public. Being obedient is part of your christian growth.
