Get a tape and sit and listen for hours. Maybe leave it on while your asleep.

I believe so. I have been studying Italian for the past 3 years, and it has been nothing but a cake walk. For instance, once you know the pronunciation of the letters, you can always pronounce the words, for they are pronounced the exact same way that they are spelled, with minor exceptions such as "chi" and "che." Since you know some French, Italian will come somewhat easier to you than if a purely English-speaking person were to pick it up. In Italian, you don't have the "j," "g," or "y" sounds to deal with, which is a nice little plus, but you also don't get the large amount of people who would understand you like you do in Spanish. I, personally, love the Italian language and didn't want to take Spanish because I believed (and still do) that it was far too common, though a beautiful language all the same. I already know one of the most common languages on Earth (and certainly the widest-spoken one), so I decided to go with the underdog, and I have never regretted that decision.

Hi there
Seriously the best way to learn italian is to get a tape and listen to it on way to work whilst cooking etc and have a basic general knowledge (which i think you said you did) then the BEST way to learn is to GO TO italy. Its an amazing place! Love it so much.
I wasnt fluent then i went for a week last summer and again in Feb and its amazing how much you pick up without realising.
BUT be careful... a lot of different areas use different words. .like us the difference between Scottish and American i guess.. if that makes sense,
If your from uk... i got the Buonjourno Italia book and tape from Borders for £13... really good

GO TO ITALY! Believe me - it would be impossible for you not to learn Italian. Realistically, you will never speak Italian perfectly if you are learning the language as an adult.

I can tell you..
when my girlfriend came to Italy for 1 year, she still sounded as a stranger afterward.
Master the language is not hard, you could go for some teaching softwares (rosetta stone is cool for a fast and easy shower of well known statements), but the best way to "sound" italian is to listen to your own voice. It's difficult though...
Good luck

Apparently the easiest and most effective way, would be to move there. Saying that, get a partner who is Italian, or socialise with Italians.

The best way, by far, to learn any language is to spend time in the country.
