"If one day Taiwan goes independent, what harm will it do to us?"
This is not my word, but Mr. Hong Bo's.

Mainalnd Chinese can't be a spokesman of Taiwan. And this is NOT historical question.
Seeing in other sections, the people in the world are seen more down-to-earth.

In reality, there will be no harm to the PRC. In all intents and purposes, TW is already independent politically, economically, socially, culturally. De facto, TW is a country, and by being a country, it does not take anything away from China.
You are correct, this is a serious question, especially for peace in the region. A conflict between the PRC and TW would have grave repercussions on the security of the whole continent, if not the world, and not to say the least on people on both sides of the strait. I hope that if TW declares independence, cool heads and peace will prevail at the PRC leadership, and that the two countries will be able to have cordial relations as equal.

TW to become an independent and normal country? Not IN A MILLION YEARS! In practice, It might have been independent for decades, but Chinese ppl won't let it become a real country.
You have to understand the culture and history of China. Most of the population think that unification is more important than a double digit growth. Discussing the goods/bads of the TW's independency just doesn't make any sense cz' they are determined to stop that at any expense, period.

Massive Taiwan refugees pour into Hong Kong and mainland China. Most of them are business men and their families who have invested a huge number of money over there.

China is a society that treats hostory very seriously. Thoughout history, China has regained control over taiwan by force at least 3 times. China is willing to lost other benifits or make enemy if that is what it takes to re-take Taiwan.
Taiwan will not be independent from China even in your next life.
