My son would like a LCD/HD TV for Christmas. I know that HD stands for High Definition. But what does it actually do when you are watching it. So I have been looking at TV's to buy, but the LCD TV's look the same to me as the HD TV's do.

Or is it just me and they are very different.

Thank you so much.

Here is the simple answer. If you watch something that is actually HDTV with the proper hook-up to see it in HD then it is dramatically different. If however you hook the TV up the same way as you did the regular TV to cable or satellite box then you see no change.

You will see a change if the program is in HD and one of the following is true:

1. The source of programming is HD and is on a HDTV channel via an antenna and you are tuning it in on a HDTV with an ATSC tuner (America) or DVB-Freeview tuner (United Kingdom).

2. The source of programming is HD and is coming to your HDTV a component plus audio or HDMI connection from a HD capable satellite or cable box tuned to a HD channel.

3. The gaming console is an XBox 360 or Playstation 3 with those same cables Component or HDMI and is setup to play in HD with a HD capable game.

4. The DVD player is a Blue Ray, HD-DVD or dual format high definition player with those same cables and a HD movie to play.

They might look the same if the TV is really small or if you are sitting really far away from it.

HD TV's are capable of displaying much more information so the picture is far superior to standard.
Just buying an HD TV though is not enough, you have to have an HD source which, at the moment is best achieved through Sky HD, it will cost about £300.00 to set up and is £10.00 a month more expensive that 'normal' Sky TV.

An LCD is just one of several different technologies used to make HDTVs. Others are plasma, CRT (not many around), DLP (one of several types of rear projection TVs).
So-an HDTV can be an LCD, a Plasma set, and so on.
Get the December issue of Consumer Reports. They explain HDTV, and review many sets. Good luck!

If you're going to spend the money, get a 1080 resolution rather than a 720. LCD T.V.'s in HD only matter if you've got an HD input. The picture is as clear as crystal.

I nkow this isn't an answer to your question but if what you want is a relatively small TV then don't bother getting an HDTV...my friend bought a small (computer moniter sized) HDTV and I see no difference really...
