Disclaimer: I know that oxygen was present in the air before it was discovered Priestley, Scheele, and Lavoisier in the 1700's. (After all, I am a chemist.) However, I'm looking for an answer to mess with the minds of, say, little children for example, or in my case our goofy felines. That is, put out your most outrageous yet semi-plausible answer, and have fun in the process.

Vapors may come and vapors may go
And even though all those dead people can't know
When birdies found they had something to crow to
The stuff they breathed in turned out to be O2
They called it "miasma" in that long-ago past
How could they have known they were all full of GAS?!!

People prior to the discovery were breathing "air" or the "breathe of life". After the discovery, humanity evolved into breathing "Oxygen".

Well in front of my experience: They Didn't!!
The Posh snobs were too Posh to even care if they were breathing or not.So, they just pinched their noses(so thats why you can find some ppl having long smaller-than-other noses)
The Villagers picked it so hard, that up till now, you can find their inheritance having HUGE nostrils..Walaa!! :D
