It depends. Most herniated discs will resolve within six weeks. A herniated disc is where the tough outer shell rips allowing the inside soft jelly to leak out and then retreat and leak out, depending on what activity you do. Likewise depending on what site the split is, inside, outside, near the nerve roots? As we age, the jelly inside the disc dehydrates, so come 60, the discs are pretty solid, no shock absorbing properties and no leaking, so no problem. Once upon a time they would remove the disc, but that depends on the position of the leak, what it comes into contact with, over all health of person let alone age. These days they are more likely to leave well alone, as many people who had disc removal and fusion, still have pain and then risk another disc popping.
