It makes me think of The Sopranos, gangsters, drug-smugglers, etc. It really doesn't do much for the 'moral atheist' image, does it?

Well, I really just asked this question because I was bored...lol. I get the irony, although I didn't know a Christian started the thing. Thanks for the info, Zebra.
Poppy, ROFLMAO..."Whores of Babylon"? The fundies are an embarrassment.

OK, what is this Christian Militia thing? Is that something in RL, or on Y!A?

Good points, Kal. I didn't realize it was Christians who started it until now.
Hope you are doing well.

Nah...it shows they have a well-developed sense of humor.
No doubt if some atheist ran around calling Christians a similar name (e.g., Nazi Christian), many militant Christians would be offended and respond to name calling and condemnation. On the other hand, when some militant Christian(s) started calling atheists the Atheist Mafia, the atheists responded with humor and began using the tag (AM) as a badge of honor.
Don't know about you, but I think it is a pretty healthy response. I may not agree with them, but laughing about an insult sounds a lot more "Christian" than delivering the insult in the first place!

AM member here!
We were *given* that label by some Christian fundies on R&S. If you can't recognise the irony in such thing ...
There's another one: VT (Vile Temptress), again given by Christian fundies. They called us - women atheists - ''Whores of Babylon''
.......
Just because we have a healthy sense of humour doesn't mean we're immoral. You'd have to get to know each and every one of us to decide who's moral or not. Atheism is not a religion, nor do we have the urge to have a community and belong to something (in this case atheism). What atheists share in common is only the lack of belief in God. When another atheist goes out and commits a crime, I don't blush for him, nor do I apologise for him making atheists look bad. In fact that's one of the things I love most about atheism - my actions are my actions and they're only the reflection of my personality and character. It's not like in order to be an atheist you have to adopt some generally accepted rules imposed on by atheism. No dogma here, therefore individuality comes out.

Well, I never heard the term before. But all things being equal I am sure some atheists are probably self-described "Mafia."
Just like many believers.

It was a Christian that coined the term first. We don't mind a little tongue-in-cheek self-labeling.

I think there has been an over-the-head irony-missing incident here today.

Who said I was moral? Most Atheists are, but it doesn't mean I am.
