During the time period from when Joseph first received the plates from Moroni, until the time Moroni took the plates back, Joseph Smith "hide" the plates in several places to prevent them from being taken by people desirous to get financial gain from them. During the time period Joseph translated the engravings off of the plates, many unrighteous individuals tried to take the plates from him.
Some of the places Joseph "hid" the plates, were under the floor boards of a barn, in the hearth stones of a fireplace and in a the bottom of a grain barrel.
Before the angel Moroni took the plates back, a total of 11 other witnesses saw and held the plates.

He didn't hide them from everyone. There were a few of witnesses (I'll edit tomorrow with exactly how many, i'm going ot bed soon), but when he was done translating, the angel Moroni came and took them back.

Acid Zebra, there were people who saw Moroni:
Oliver Cowdery, David Whitmer, and Martin Harris. Other early Mormons said they saw Moroni include Mary Whitmer (who called him "Brother Nephi"), Emma Hale Smith, Hyrum Smith, Luke S. Johnson, Zera Pulsipher, W. W. Phelps, John P. Greene and his wife Rhoda, John Taylor, Oliver Granger, and Heber C. Kimball, Lucy Harris, and Harrison Burgess.

I don't believe we are told why they were taken back. I do know that after the 116(?) pages were stolen, they were taken back briefly, but that doesn't tell you anything....lol I'm sorry i don't have the answer to that.

Joseph Smith was a smart man and he knew how to make money and he was a treasure seeker and was into the occult so what are the chances these tablets existed.
