i bought this remote

for my nikon d40 and i cant seem to get it to work. im pretty sure i put it on the remote setting but when i click the button it wont work. the light doesnt even go on or anything. any idea what could be wrong? what do you have to do to set up the remote for it? what am i doing wrong?

1) check the orientation of the battery in the remote.

2) make sure the battery is fresh and not dead.

3) set the D40 to receive the remote signal. If I recall correctly, there's 2 settings, one for remote and one for remote with self timer. Under the second setting, there's a delay before the shutter fires.

4) If none of those things work, exchange the remote--it's either dead, broken or the wrong model.

The only Nikon-approved remote for the D40 is the ML-L3.

The unit you bought does not appear to be one, and that could account for it not working.

If the unit came with instructions, they might help.

You'll need to set the camera up for remote. The manual shows you how.

Make sure remote setting on camera is set.
make sure remote has fresh batteries

if all else fails go out and buy the correct Nikon MLL3 remote for the camera

When all else fails, READ & STUDY the Owner's Manual for your camera.

I'm guessing that you are trying to use the self-timer on the camera. Study that section in the Manual.
