My husband has a lot of space between many of his teeth. Is irrigation of that area better than flossing? One of the hygenist suggested that the floss can't do what it's supposed to do because of the gaps.

Absolutely!
Waterpick is great on wider spaces and floss the areas where you have contact points between the teeth.

Yes !! i have 19 crowns & even after brushing & flossing the water pic flushes out the rest. You'd be surprised to know how much is left behind !!!
