Romans 10:9 ~ That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.

Legal, as in nominal? In name only -vs- saving, enjoying a relationship with the Savior

The standard of conversion is explained very simply by Christ, in Luke 22:32.
'That I have prayed for thee that thy faith fail not; and when
thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren.' I seems that the standard of conversion would be the possession of a strengthening faith.
Christ taught against the formalized and ritualized form that Judaism was in at that time, saying it was following rules, and not seeking God, which is saving faith.

1) Jesus said it:
23 Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. 24 God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in spirit and in truth."
( John 4 )

The conversion started with Jesus. You confess or proclaim Jesus to God, and declare the fact that you are a sinner, and need His grace provided by His Son. He is turn has promised the Holy Spirit ( John 15 and 16 ) to dwell with you, and bring you to salvation and knowledge of the truth.

2) Saving faith is placed in Him. So I am saying that the way you started, you continue. Not in the works of legalistic rules, but in the spirit of truth. You started by trusting His words as being true for salvation, now trust Him for anything else He uttered. Go through life in that way, pushing yourself to trust Him more. Tell yourself that yesterday's faith will not get you through today. Pick a promise from God's word and make it something to live by.

For example:
Psalm 37
3 Trust in the LORD and do good;
dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture.

4 Delight yourself in the LORD
and he will give you the desires of your heart.

5 Commit your way to the LORD;
trust in him and he will do this:

6 He will make your righteousness shine like the dawn,
the justice of your cause like the noonday sun.

Stop and consider these words and live by them in the name of God's Son, Jesus Christ.

The standard of conversion - turn away from whatever you believed before and embrace your new belief whole heartedly.

Legal faith - what goes on your hospital admission form whether you practice it or not.
Saving faith - day-to-day on-going relationship with God through Christ
