No, not really. That just goes along with the joke (real) that one of their ranks is Seaman (Semen, haha). It is a dumb joke and most of it comes from guys being trapped on a ship/sub for a long time. Its not real (as far as I know) and I have plenty of Navy friends that are all straight.

No they are lots and lots of straight people who enjoy the opposite sex. But there is a "don't ask, don't tell" policy that is upheld by all branches of the military. You do not ask if someone is gay, but in turn if you are you do not discuss it. If your friend KNOWS of people openly gay in the Navy or any other branch chances are they are no longer serving due to this, it is a reason for a discharge.

Very wrong
As stated, it because of the seaman rank, men being trapped of vessles together for long periods, and the locker anticts that go on. But the dudes are straight! Once in a while you get a gay guy, but no more often than anywhere else.

Wrong. And it's obvious your friend never spent one day in the Navy.

I have read in books and heard from some friends that this happens a lot in merchant navy where people are on ship for months without any external world contact.

After some time they start hitting on other men on ship.

Dont know if this is true though need to ask a guy on ship.

I would say that across the military as a whole the percentage of actuals gays fall short (but not by much) of the national average.

There are gays in all branchs, no more so in the Navy than any others. I would be more worried about how he came to that comclusion, could it be, he is gay and looking?

If you have ever been to a port when a Navy ship pulls in you would know they are mostly straight.

There are some gay people in the military, but they are all in the closet.

Military people usually know who is gay and who is not, they are usually pretty easy to spot, but they do their jobs and most military people don't care.

There is no gay witch hunt.

That is a VERY old joke that needs to die. They have no higher a gay-straight ratio than any other service.
