I'd say you don't use canned goods at all.... In any case you are a cook who uses fresh and or frozen foods and not canned goods.
The canned goods I use are:
tomatoes
beer
sardines
garbanzos
water chestnuts
corn
condensed milk
coconut milk
sauerkraut
jalapenos
hominy
smoked oysters or mussels
salmon (sometimes)
crab meat
pineapple or peaches (for cakes)
mushrooms
palm hearts
patè
szechuan pickle
baked beans (once in a blue moon)

There is a a place for canned goods in all kitchens. Like you said, tinned toms are excellent.
I use tinned chick peas for hummus. Who has the time to remember to soak the peas overnight and then boil them for an hour and a half?.
I only use the cheap butterfly can openers. Mine has fallen down the back of the cooker(again) so I will have to drag the oven out, wash the dust off the can opener and hope nobody noticed!.
If you enjoy cooking, then you will be a good cook. I suspect that you enjoy planning meals, buying the food and presenting your family with a healthy nutritious meal.
When I worked as a social worker, the number of families I came across where neither parent cooked was too depressing.
The children didn't know what fruit or a vegetable was. I gave them a plate of pasta with pesto sauce and they were happily eating it until their Mother started making yucky noises. She would give them a slice of white bread with a cheap jam smeared on and pushed outside to sit in the gutter to eat it. All the family income went on cigarettes.
Keep cooking the delicious meals. Any chance of an invite for dinner?.

My Mum is just the same. I laughed till I cried watching her get so annoyed with the new can opener. In the end I had to help because I couldn't bear it any more.
But my Mum is a fantastic cook. And I am sure you are, too.
PS I bought her an electric can opener. She can't use that either.

was it the safety kind that opens the cans on the side, so it doesn't leave a sharp rim? Because the first time I tried to use mine, I was soo frustrated! A few of my friends had the same experience. Now I'm used to it and it's so much better than the old one :)

Only a mediocre cook does not know how to use a can opener. No offense but canned product are very important in cooking sometimes.

Good for you, our family hardly ever use canned products either and prefer fresh.
Some people think vegetables grow in cans or in the packet.

you sound like a great cook, the best cooks don't use cans or prepared products...try to use a knife or a bottle opener if you have one. it'll take a bit longer but it works.
