If you were to eat (and successfully swallow) a tablespoon of salt in one go would it cause instant death? If not, any damage? Or how much salt would you need? I heard it gives you a heart attack.

sudden excess of sodium chloride (common table salt) has been used in the past, in warm water to induce vomit.
It turned out, that it was a poor medicine for provoking vomit, sane as ipeca syrup, apomorphine subcutaneous (injected) etc
When it failed, it causes sodium retention with some degree of fluid retention, puffy eye lids, and high blood pressure in persons that already suffered it.
The fluid retention is corrected by the kidney in the following 36- 48 hours.
It does NOT cause death, nor myocardial infarction.
It does NOT cause any damage, because the excess of salt will cause thirst that will help the kidney to get rid of the excess of salt, as we said above.
There is not a grain of truth in whet you have heard about salt.

Eating a table spoon of salt is not good, Salt is one of the factors of high blood pressure. If you eat alot of salt it can cause your blood pressure to go high after a while and you will get sick.

i just ate a tablespoon of salt, because somebody told me it would make me stop coughing. I took it like I would take a pill. I hunched right over and couldn t breathe for a good 60 seconds or so. I drank some water and slowly gained my ability to breathe again over the course of about five mins. drinking as much water as I could (little sips that I had to choke down)...don t ever do this....

snorting a line of salt results in turning mucus into what felt like rubber cement. i did it on a dare once ( the kid said it was sugar n he d give me 10 dollars to snort it ) i couldn t inhale for a good 3-4 minutes, almost passing out. so, my conclusion; an easy suicide for those of you wanting to achieve it. snort a gratuitous line if salt. snot thickens n blockes breathing passages n you would expire from lack of oxygen. go ahead n do it. make the salt line about o good foot long, cut a straw in half n snort away. by chance you do not die, let me know by sharing your experience here...

Death would not be instantaneous, and it would take a great deal more than a tablespoon. The immediate health risk salt poses is dehydration. The more long-term risk is high blood pressure.

Well, you did say "salt" but did not specify sodium chloride, while that would be by far the most common use of the word "salt" there are other chemicals that are "salts" I suspect a tablespoon of potassium cyanide would cause rapid death.

For sodium chloride, no a table spoon full would not kill you.
