My six year old son is in cubscouts and has just earned his first badge. There is another boy in the troop, who is the only one that doesn't have a cubscout shirt. I felt very sad for him when he told me his mom was trying to find one. I think he should have something to display his badge on. I would happily buy him a shirt myself, but I am afraid of offending his mother. Also she has an older son in scouts that has no shirt and I am concerned that it would make him feel bad. What do you think? Should I buy a shirt for him, or not?

Buy it and give it to the scout master and ask them to give it to the kids and say they had an extra one that another kid outgrew that happened to be their size.

Hello TMC2B:

All boys should have access to a uniform shirt. If you need help finding a used uniform, try http://euxnetwork.net.

I've found that boys that are given shirts treat them with disdain. If they have to earn the shirt, they respect it much more. Is there a way you can provide an opportunity for the boys to earn the funds to buy their own shirts? Fund raisers, after school job, or other way?

Keep on Scoutin'

I think that is very sweet of you! There are so many mothers out there who want to provide the best for their children and just don't have the money to do so. I think that it would be a great thing for you to do that. You could also talk to another mother and maybe she would donate a shirt to the other kid without making the mother feel bad.
It's Christmas time and it's a time of giving.

Talk to the mother and see if she is okay with you buying him a shirt. You could also see if you can find one for the older son at a second hand store or just through friends.

Buy the shirt and wash it a couple of times and let the mom know that you know she was looking for one Tell her your sister or aunt or whoever has one that their son had outgrew or something and ask her if she would like to have it.

Could you buy a second hand one (or even a new one) and simply say that you knew someone that didn't need it. She may know what you are doing but could feel less embarrassed about "charity"... or give them the shirts as christmas presents if that's appropriate

I'd buy them and tell the mom you knew she'd been looking for some. Offer them to her, and when she asks how much, tell her not to worry about it. If she insists on buying them, tell her they cost less than what you really paid and let her pay that. I know that's all technically dishonest, but it'd be a way for her to pay if she felt taking the shirts as a gift would be inappropriate.

No unfortunately you cant. Dont worry I am the same as you. I want to do things like that all the time. I always check with my husband and he tells me reality. Sometimes its ok but other times he says no you cant do that because .........

I would say you would be interfering. It will make the mother feel bad and the older child too.
