I believe in a bodily resurrection from the dead, and a bodily ascension of those still living at Christ's return. I don't buy into the pre-tribulation rapture philosophy, I don't really find good scriptural evidence for it when taken in context - however, like everyone else's opinion on the matter, I could be wrong!

It's the whole man - spirit, soul and body - that go up in the rapture.

In I Corinthians 15:52-54, it talks about our bodies being changed (though that's not where the rapture is spoken about, it shows that the dead in Christ rise physically before the rapture and we all put on the same type of immortal body which Jesus had when He was raised from the dead) - 52-"In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the [sound of the] last trumpet call. For a trumpet will sound, and the dead [in Christ] will be raised imperishable (free and immune from decay), and we shall be changed (transformed)."
53-"For this perishable [part of us] must put on the imperishable [nature], and this mortal [part of us, this nature that is capable of dying] must put on immortality (freedom from death)."
54-"And when this perishable puts on the imperishable and this that was capable of dying puts on freedom from death, then shall be fulfilled the Scripture that says, Death is swallowed up (utterly vanquished forever) in and unto victory. [Isa. 25:8.]"

Then, in I Thessalonians 4:16 & 17:

16-"For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a loud cry of summons, with the shout of an archangel, and with the blast of the trumpet of God. And those who have departed this life in Christ will rise first."
17-"Then we, the living ones who remain [on the earth], shall simultaneously be caught up along with [the resurrected dead] in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air; and so always (through the eternity of the eternities) we shall be with the Lord!"

There's the rapture, and it talks, again, about the dead in Christ rising first and then all of us going up together. The dead in Christ can't rise spiritually, because their spirits have been in Heaven all this time not in the grave (only the body dies).

The way I see it, Paul is saying that the dead rise, we all receive our immortal bodies, then we are all called up.

At the rapture all three parts of the person (body, soul and spirit will rise from this earth and the body will instantly be changed into our glorified bodies. Even the graves of those who have gone on before will open up and the dead in Christ will rise first and we shall meet them in the air.
