There are a lot of really good cookbooks for rookies. one i love is betty crocker it has a lot of great tips for beginners. Or go to foodnetwork.com. soup is always a good thing to start out with. Its hard to mess up soup and its all in one pot. There is also a good recipe for stove top lasagna. in a large pot brown a pound of ground beef, add a 1 cup of italian dressing (any kind), 1/4 cup water and some oven ready lasagna noodles broken into pieces. you can find them next to the regular noodles in the grocery store. cover the pot and cook on medium until the noodles are tender. stir occasionally. if you see its getting dry and the noodles arent done add a little more water. When its done add 2 cups of shredded mozzerella cheese or more for taste. Good luck

Invest in a good cookbook such as Better Homes and Gardens New Cookbook. It gives step-by-step instructions, it has pictures and it explains basic cooking techniques. Betty Crocker and Pillsbury also publish good basic cookbooks.

Meatloaf is one of the easiest things for a rookie to make - make smashed potatoes and whole or French-style green beans or baby carrots to go with it.

Meatloaf
3 pounds lean ground beef
3 large eggs
1/2 to 3/4 cup Italian style bread crumbs
1 packet Lipton's Onion or Beefy Onion Soup Mix
1 can sliced mushrooms - drained
1/2 cup sliced black olives
2 tablespoons BBQ sauce
1 tablespoon A-1 sauce
1/2 cup salsa
1/2 cup shredded cheese - I use a combination of Cheddar, Italian Blend and Pepper-Jack cheeses or whatever I have on hand

Mix all ingredients, form into a loaf in a loaf pan, bake at 350 degrees F for 1 1/2 hours.

It's probably a good idea for you to invest in a really good cookbook like Betty Crocker's or Taste of Home. The recipes are generally accompanied by some good pictures and are fairly easy to make. Then, I'd consider what his favorite foods are. Does his mother have a good recipe she'd like to share? What are your favorite foods and can you get the recipe from your mom or dad? Here's some ideas:

1. Meatloaf, mashed potatos, green beans.
2. Spaghetti and meatballs or sausage
3. Roasted chicken with stuffing and mashed potatoes and gravey.
4. Pork chops smothered in cream of mushroom soup with mashed potatoes.

Check out AllRecipes.com as well. Good luck!

"No worry" appliances are your best friends. Invest in a George Forman Grill and a crock pot/slow cooker. You can put anything into a crock pot. Chop up some beef or chicken, your favorite veggies, add stock or bullion, a little water and a can of Cream of: Mushroom, Chicken, Broccoli or Celery, turn it on low and let it cook all day. It won't burn or dry out. Put on some rice to pour it over and you're done. Too easy. Also, if you can boil water, you can make a great pasta dish. Ragu has an awesome bottle of Alfredo Sauce. Add some veggies and embellishment for presentation (make it look like you slaved) throw in some chicken (cooked on your grill) or shrimp. Cooking is highly over rated. Its all trial and error. If you screw up, its usually easy to see what you did wrong. Throw it out (before anyone knows) and try again.
