People think a LOT of things about that.
You lose nationalism, lack of focus in more important subjects, your brain gets bigger, etc...

I personally think it is an awesome method to literally open your mind. You learn a lot about abstract concepts and logic by learning bilingually. I personally grew up attending a german-spanish, a spanish-english, a spanish-french, and a english-japanese school. And I thank my parents so much for making me do that. Not only it is an advantage in this global community we live in, but it really makes your head work by understanding metaphorical expressions you can think in spanish yet you can maybe not translate into german. Subtleties like that are what define cultures and ways of thinking.

The only neg point about bilingual education is that it involves more work.
It's worth it if you keep speaking and learning the languages.
And why limit yourself to bilingual. Make it trilingual.
You don't have to be perfect at it, as long as the effort it sustained.

However, it should not be about changing the official language to suit people who don't want to learn the national language.

As far as those who think it's the demise of their culture, I'd say that most of those who claim such things, don't even speak their own language like they should.

The problem I see with it as it is set up right now is that the children aren't really learning English. You really can't learn another language if all you are hearing is your own language.
