I have just welcomed my daughter into the world and need a nickname for her grandmother. My mother has plenty of grandchildren and they call her Mamo (from the Gaelic). This is my wife's mother's first grandchild and we need a good name for her. Her heritage is German, English, Irish, French and Native American, she is from the Carolinas if that helps. Gran, Grandma, Granny are just too old and too pretentious. Mamo is great, we want this one to be great, too.

My mother is going through the same delima...she doesn't want to be called anyhting that wound make her sound too old. I think Mimi, memaw, or nana are great names. Nana is my favorite because is doesnt sound old at all and it is actually a cute nickname for any age. But, I believe children are such a blessing and whatever they decide to call there grandparents first without any help is always the best. I called my grandmother moo-moo because as a young child I had ear problems and when my cousins would call her memaw I heard moo-moo. My nieces call my mother Lea-o because when we say her name, lydia, that's what they hear is lea-o...and my mother absolutley loves the name and uses it for her "grandmother" name for all of the grandchildren. Good Luck with the decision and congrats!!!!

Momita,or Ita is not German, English Irish or anything like that Its actually Spanish for little mom. My cousins and I called our grandmother that because we couldn't say the real Spanish term for grandmother. It came out as momita. or Ita

Why not look up the word for grandmother in each of her heritage languages (whatever Native American tribe she is from also) and choose it from one of those.

Look up the words for her heritage & if it's too long or hard for the child to say shorten it.
