people for reasons of your own? How afraid are you of losing Internet friends?

I understand some people may not feel comfortable answering these questions, and I don't expect many answers.

*hugs to all*

I have seen people here worshiping some of the other posters. The flock to their questions, their answers, and basically act like a rock star groupie; it's ridiculous for adults to act that way. Maybe now it is more clear. If you aren't a regular here, you wouldn't know this.

Nebtit, what am I revealing about myself, since you have a PhD.

Moon, you are the best Internet friend ever. :)

You are absolutely right, Gazza. I guess I'm a little melodramatic tonight because I have a migraine.

Lots of people are going to try to sugar coat this subject (many already have) and try to make it look like you've got it all wrong. Please, don't fall for that. You're actually spot on. I have noticed the behaviors you mentioned all the time in R&S and I think it's kind of sad that adults are acting like that. But hey, they have the right to act like dorks if they want to, so I just leave them to it.

By the way, I asked a question a bit similar to this a while back and got the same type of "it's your problem" response. It's nice to know that I'm not the only person willing to admit that this goes on and that it is a bit disturbing to witness.

"Are you here to win a popularity contest?"

No. Not really. I've never really been interested in "popularity".

"Or are you maybe latching on to popular people for reasons of your own?"

Why would I want to? Just because someone is "popular" doesn't mean they're right... or kind or nice or anything else. Just means they're popular. *Shrugs* Really not that important actually.

"How afraid are you of losing Internet friends?"

In order to loose "internet" friends I would have to have them to begin with. I can't fear loosing what I don't have.

My friends are my friends. Pure and simple. I may talk to some of them over the internet... but I know all of them in real life.

Seeing how I don't know anyone here (but would be up to getting to know some of them), I don't really see myself trying to win a popularity contest. And since internet friends are so easy to come by, it's really not an issue of losing them.

What really confuses me though is.. what does that have to do with R&S?

I'm here because I enjoy mindfully answering questions and sharing my experiences with others. I have never tried to win a popularity contest as I usually just speak what's on my mind. If I don't have anything useful to say, I won't answer the question. Preciate You! and Hugs back at you by the way.

This isn't really a question in search of a specific answer, but I guess you are attempting to promote the importance of eros in human interaction. For what it's worth, I agree -- I always value in-person human interaction before phone conversations, and phone conversations before instant messenger chats, and IM chats before e-mail, because each of these media is more immediate and personal than the one before it. The internet is a great tool for communication, but it's certainly no replacement for spending real time with real people in a real place.

Not to sound snide, but do you think most of our relationships begin and end here? I have contacts that I Email regularly and talk to over the telephone. When they see a question that's interesting, they star it. They star it, I'll see it... and curriousity makes me investigate. I of course will answer only questions that I've read... so naturally most of my answers fall on questions which have already been responded to by my Online friends.

It's not about being a groupie. Why not track down Ramjet and ask her how much she agrees with many of my views? I'm an Atheist--she's not. Yet I'll voice my opinions quite freely, dispite how my numerous contacts might feel about it.

I'd want them to do the same.

No... Answering because your question was starred by a couple of contacts. I'm not sure who's popular. Sure I have a few internet friends and it's sad to lose a friend. However, I'm not here to impress anyone.

Well what are those star thingies for if not for following?

Actually, I think you are out on a limb on this question... I don't think it has anything to do with contest .... some people are simply entertaining.. and since this is meant to be an entertainment forum .... finding people who are entertaining is kind of the point.... isn't it? Like the guy who cloned John d mayer tonight is as funny as heck if you know of John d Mayer. Funny that is.. unless you are john d mayer.... but hey!

I mean.... if you want droll knowledge.. you look it up on an encyclopedia and then check the sources... that's not entertaining.. that's just work.

There isn't anybody in R&S that I know well enough to call a "friend". Latching on to popular people? No, I don't think I do that.

Hugs back at ya.

It's nice to have Internet friends, but you've got to keep it in perspective. I'm not afraid of losing Internet friends. It's not a popularity contest for me.
