The number of people is not the answer to your question. The question is why does the Hamas keep antagonizing the Israeli's in Israel's borders? How much more patient can the Israeli people be with the Hamas declaring war on them, without really declaring war?

I served in IDF (now I live in Eastern Europe), so I'll tell you, these terrorists are murderers and they deserve this punishment. There was a case of young palestinian stabbing pregnant woman. There was a case of a terrorists blowing up a school bus full of kids. Last year a KASAM rocket landed on school (thanks G-d, there were no kids then). A friend of mine was killed in a suicide bombing. The fact of suicide bombings is a good reason to our proper reaction too . Most criminal activities are done by them too (stealing cars, drugs production and smuggling, illegal imports, etc.).
But, to be just, I'll tell you, not every terrorist is a palestinian and not every palestinian is a terrorist. I've met some nice people, who (as we are too) are tired of this war. IMHO, when we'll waste all of those damn terrorists all over the world, we'll have a great life together.
