I've been going to my therapist for close to a year, and I have been borderline clinically depressed. Latley it has become worse, and my sleeping patterns are horrible, I'm always tired, unmotivated to do anything, and pretty much sick of my life (which is pretty bland anyway). I'm in a downward spiral and can't escape this so I'm going to the doctor tomorrow, and am going to talk to him about getting anti-depressant medicine. I've never been on any kind of pills so I am kind of scared, but has anyone taken them or know anyone who has? I've not been going to my job and college I can't deal with it anymore and I'm hoping this will help me feel better. Do anti-depressents really work? I dont want to get my hopes up if they don't work. Can anyone tell me what kinds did or didnt work for them. Thanks

I was diagnosed with depression at the age of 11. They gave me anti depressant Zoloft. It does indeed work, but as with all anti-depressants,suicidal thoughts can accure. I was on the medicine for a year, and then stopped taking it due to just that, suicidal thoughts.

If you need them, and it does sound like you do..then give it a try. It's worth it.

xx

Before you begin to pop those pills, I strongly suggest you try some other things.

Depression can be caused by several things; situations, chemical imbalances, improper diet and even weather.

Are you eating properly? No junk, sugary foods, sodas, alcohol, just good stuff. Do you get exercise daily? That elevates mood by producing endorphins in the brain.

Have you been tested for conditions that may produce depression?

Do you live in a place that does not get much sun, or don't you go outside much? It is important that you get at least 15 minutes of sun per day, even if you have to sit outside bundled up and your face and hands are the only things exposed!

Let the meds be the last step. BTW, if this therapist has not given you some tools to cope better in that year, maybe you should find a new one. Are you getting to the bottom of why this depression started? That is very important. If they haven't touched on that, I'd ask why.

Antidepressants do work, but some of them will make you more tired. One mix I really like that works is lexapro and wellbutrin. Lexapro is a really good antidepresant, but it can make you a bit tired. Wellbutrin is gives you energy to excercise, but isn't that good of an antidepressant. But if you take 10mg of Lexapro and 150 mg of Welbutrin, you get a great combination. Whatever drug you do end up taking, give it a few weeks to work. Some medications can make you more depressed so be aware of that and tell your doctor right away if that happens. You will feel so much better on medication. It'll take a while to find one that works for you. I gave you two links. The first one is how people rated lexapro. The second is how people rated Welbutrin.

I was on anti-depressants for about a year - YEs they work but only because they pump your brain full of chemicals that make you feel happy. It is just masking the bigger problem that is underneath.
Drugs are not the answer.
Keep talking to your therapist. Usually the need for (mild) anti-depressants is because of a chemical imbalance in your brain, which is causing the ill feelings, which may be infact your problem. Only you can decide!
Goodluck to you & know that you are not alone in this world
