It helps to keep moisture in, and can be used as a lubricant when having sex.
Vaseline can actually be used on your skin, lips, as lube for sex (but not with condoms, it will eat away at the latex), in your hair (although it'll be really greasy), to help clean makeup off of your skin, or even if you're making your own lipstick. There are actually many uses.

I started using vasaline as a facial sunscreen 2 weeks ago. (having previously always used regular sunscreen). Valesaline definitely prevents the skin from drying up in the sun. It gives a little itch. Definitely offers some protection. Don't feel burnt at the end of the day. Makes the city grime stick to your face but is easily washed of at the end of the day. I'm converted because the other conventional sunscreen often contains alcohol. That dries my skin.

personally, i use petroleum jelly in various of ways..
1. i dab it on my lips before going to bed and before going out -- especially now that itz freezing outside, since it helps prevent chapped lips
2. i absolutely prefer using it on my eyelashes instead of any clear mascara
3. i apply a thin layer on skin to avoid dryness.. and it also helps lighten blemishes.. i've been trying it for a couple of weeks now, and yes, my blemishes are certainly getting lighter
4. i also heard that it's a great way to avoid pimple mark.. apply it on the pimple (not too much though), and when the pimple dies out, there's almost no mark left.
5. itz an easy and amazing way of removing eye make-up -- especially eyeliner.. just use Q-tip and not ur fingers..
of course, i also believe that effects vary from person to person.. i also heard that it minimizes stretch marks.. not sure about that one since i've never tried it.. but yea..
overall, i think PJ is one of the best products ever discovered! lolz

A thick layer of anything is probably good for protecting your skin from sun damage, but I don't think it'd be fun to wear.

it keeps your skin from cracking, kind of like lip chap just a lot stronger and better for your skin because it doesn't contain any harmful colorings or ingrediants! It also helps against irrritations from allergies or from cold.
