I'd brace for fundies who will use that information to build up their own superiority complexes. The moment they tell me that Atheism led to what the gunman did, I'd remind them that Adolph Hitler was a Catholic. I'd also throw out a few other interesting items in our history: The Thirty Years' War, The Salem Witch Hunts, The Crusades, The Inquisition... And if the distance of the years has made these events seem fictional to them, I'd remind them that Osama bin Laden--while not a Christian--is most certainly not an Atheist.

I've got a lot of ammunition to defend myself with.

I would be surprised.
Not because atheists are incapable of killing people, but statistically, atheists make up such a small percentage of the population that it is highly unlikely. He was probably a Christian. If the shooting was in India, he would probably be Hindu. If China, he would probably be an atheist.

What would you say if he were revealed to be a theist? A Christian? Of your own sect? Someone you knew and liked? A close friend? Your brother?

Probably the same thing as if he was revealed to be a Christian. Crazy has no boundaries, religious or otherwise.

His fear of reprisal from a super natural figure would probably be the least of concerns about his mental state leading up to these events

It wouldn't matter.

Atheists have just as good morals as any religious person (Probably better, we aren't told to hate others). It comes down to the persons own ability to chose right and wrong.

IT'S "OBVIOUS" THIS YOUNG MAN DID NOT BELIEVE IN GOD!. If he did he would not have felt the need to "take people with him" as he did.
There's an oven waiting for him and people will not eat the cooked meal that comes out of the oven.
This is the reason people do all the crazy things that we see
going on today. they don't care about themselves or others and feel they can do what they do-when they do it without having to answer to anyone. You must pay in the end for all decisions. We adults are the worst at this and yet we tell younger children "DO AS I SAY-NOT AS I DO".
IF we are not willing to stand up for the "right" "the wrong"
"to make a difference" "HOW CAN WE EXPECT IT OF THEM". we have to teach them and then let them fly and make their own decisions. after that they"re on their own.

WE HAVE TO GET BACK TO TREATING PEOPLE THE WAY YOU WANT TO BE TREATED AND CARING ABOUT
EACH OTHER BECAUSE IT'S OUR "EVERYDAY PEOPLE"
WHO SEEM TO BE "BLOWING EACH OTHER UP".
Other countries don't have to touch us. we're killing each other.
SO IN THE END-IF YOU HAVE COMPASSION FOR OTHERS AND HAVE A SENSE OF RIGHT AND WRONG AND A FAITH IN GOD AND THAT ONE DAY YOU TOO WILL MEET YOUR MAKER-YOU'LL BE BETTER OFF.
Just look at all the cold answers and you'll see the state of our world.
GOD BLESS!
HE HAD NO FAITH.
HE MAD HIS DECISION.
