I honestly don't know of any, at least in the West, but i havent done much looking into it as of yet...it continues to shock me reading of prominent thinkers such Al Gore and Jean Chretien for example, professing their faith (no need to mention Bush because that would imply he thinks)

Not in the USA.

Saying you're an atheist is political suicide here.

There are actually probably ALOT of atheists in politics, they just realize the situation and lie about their faith.
It's not like it makes a difference anyway.

Jean Chretien rocked. Too bad we have this dork we have now.

Read up on some of the founding fathers, particularly John Adams and Thomas Jefferson. Perhaps not exactly atheist, but definitely not Christian.

"The early presidents and patriots were generally deists or Unitarians, believing in some form of impersonal Providence but rejecting the divinity of Jesus and the absurdities of the Old and New Testaments."

There have been several atheist heads of state in the east. Russia, China, North Korea, Vietnam, Cambodia - they have had lots of atheists in prominant positions. In western nations you don't see as many. I think it is because people are prejudiced against atheists.

I *heart* Jean Chretien... he called Bush an idiot, he deserves respect for saying that.

And now we're stuck with Bush's lapdog, aka Stephen Harper.

Nope as far as I know every President has had somewhat of a religious background. It was kinda a big deal to when Kennedy was a Catholic.

President Michelle Bachelet of Chile says she is agnostic, but I suspect she is atheist.

Stalin was Russian Orthodox.

None that I know of. They generally aspire to more complicated callings in life like doctors, scientists and engineers.

I have a sneaking suspicion that Guiliani is actually a closet agnostic. But you won't hear him saying that as long as he's in the Republican party.
