CONTACT IRS AT1-800-829-1040, they can provide you with a free tax transcript which is a line-by-line transcript of all the information you provided on your income tax at the time of filing. you can receive the transcript within 10 days from the day you requested.(if you need your tax return to proof your income for student financial aid or loan request, they do accept the return transcript) But if you need the actual copy of the tax return then you can down load from 4506 from the irs website: www.irs.gov and pay $39.00 (not sure if fee is still the same) and could take up to 60 days to send it to you.

If you had them prepared professionally the preparer would have a copy. If not the next best thing is to send for them at the IRS. You can get a transcript free but there will be a charge if you want a paper copy of the return.

Your preparer is not required to keep a copy of your return. He may, but he is only required to keep a list of names, addresses and SS numbers of the names of the people's returns prepared (EIN of any other entity)
