By being told that there are rewards in Heaven; whenever I do something good, it crosses my mind that I'm doing it for rewards.

I wish I'd of never been told that.

Any suggestions on how to change my perspective?

Spoken4 also said it right--please read or re-read that posting.

Dear friend, I am afraid you're about to be side-tracked or buffaloed into thinking it's what YOU do, instead of WHY you do it. By that I mean that the focus for living should be to "do all to the glory of God (I Corinthians 10:31)". Think of it this way: each day, when you go to work or school, you pretty much know what the boss or teacher wants you to do. When you comply, you receive a reward--the reward depends on how well you do the tasks assigned. It may or may not be money, but also in terms of building or killing your reputation based on attitude, effort, etc. The same with the Lord Jesus Christ. He gave us some rather specific instructions in the Bible. He also gives us the chance to choose to follow His daily leading or reject it. Again, the reward may be based on not only what we do, but why we do it. Please re-read First Corinthians 3 and that may help keep things in balance.

May I give a personal example? Over twenty years ago, there was a week of revival meetings with an associate of a well-known evangelist (I won't mention who, or where). So I thought, man, I could pile up the rewards by doing this, that, and the other. I didn't get much of a chance to do any of the above, and I think it was because my attitude was all wrong. Because my motivation had been reward-focused, I didn't get much of anything done, and sure didn't get any rewards. Had this been done with the attitude of a servant, or "Here am I, Lord, send me" then things may have been very different. But when the day comes, and I stand face-to-face with Jesus before the judgment (bema) seat, I know He will judge fairly and honestly. O that I might live a life worthy of Him Who saved my soul and gives opportunities.

PS--there is a tract you can find online called "Others May, But You Cannot". It changed my life!

Just do it for yourself. You will never know for sure what satifies God's needs until you pass on, but you know what will satify yours. I'm pretty sure if your happy, God is happy to.

That's all I can say at the moment. sorry, I know that's not a very detailed answer.

Whenever you do something, put in your mind you are doing it for the Lord to bring Glory to Him.
