Mental illness cannot be prevented. Only treated after diagnosis with therapy, medications, and family/ community support.
The National Alliance for the Mentally Ill (NAMI) is a great resource for learning about all mental illnesses and finding supports groups in your area. Classes may be available near your home town to teach about specific illnesses and how to deal with them, or how to educate family and friends about it.

As a social worker and grad student, I know of no "prevention" strategies for mental health because we can't prevent mental health, we can help those dealing with mental illness in many ways. So I think I'm unclear about the question.

Was there anything specific you were thinking of so I can try to give a more thorough answer?

Since mental illness can't be prevented all the professionals can do it help those with it learn how to live productive lives despite it. In NY and a few other states they have a program called ACT, which stands for Assertive Community Treatment. It is comprised of a team of Mental health professionals who come to your house to treat you. The team consists of a Psychiatrist for medications, a psychologist, two to three psychiatric social workers, who each have a different area of expertise. One in family relations, one who helps deal with any legal issues and one who deals with housing and jobs. There are two nurses to help deal with under lining medical issues such as high blood pressure,etc.. and a peer advocate. Someone who's also a patient but who's been trained to help others advocate for themselves. I see my psychiatrist once a week, my psychologist once a week and any of the others as needed. It is a highly effective way of getting to those who might not want to come in for treatment or who don't take their medications regularly. It also gives you a different perspective on a person's mental health if you can see where they live and how they live. If you go to their house and it's clean and neat for months on end, and than it starts to get dirty, you know somethings' going on. The doctor or social worker might be able to step in before it gets worse.

in general ,mental disorders are unpreventable .what we can do is to alter the bad environmental causes for it, so healthy relationships, sport activities, and probably faith may be a kind of community shield against mental illnesses.
