The answer is C.

Manifest Destiny was the desire for American expansion.
American soldiers were killed in a border skirmish on the Rio Grande.
Polk wanted to acquire California; Texas had already been annexed.

C I don't know what they are talking about, or D

A was popular with most Souther Democrats
B a patrol was killed by Mexicans while patrolling between the Rio Grande and the Nueces River.
D Polk wanted California and even offered to buy it for about $50M., although this could be seen as a vialbe answer. Somebody said the fight was over Texas and to some extent, that was true because Mexico did not ratify the Treatly of Velasco that their President and General Santa Anna signed after being captured at the battle of San Jacinto. Therefore there was a dispute over the Texas land more than the California land.
