I've been experimenting with flyback transfomers lately. I just hold a piece of metal in my hands for the coil to arc over. Most of the time it doesn't hurt that much. Will this shorten my lifespan, im just curious?

It will shorten your lifespan tremendously if you ground yourself at the wrong moment.

Otherwise, probably not too much of an effect.

Once ...i mean once ..i discharged a hot fly-back in operation..(25" zenith) yea i lived..i just have a few stars in my eyes to this date...anyway I'm not a doctor but i can say this i have not had any associated problems that I'm aware of in 20 years and feel pretty good today....One of the side effects though is that when i open my mouth a green ,red and blue light is emitted...my wife doesn't mind though she just props me up in front of the aluminum Christmas tree and the neighbors love the glow......Ho Ho...Merry Christmas From the E.

If you are still alive, you will be OK.
A small tv flyback won't hurt you.
But don't try that with a serious HV transformer
like the one in the microwave. THAT will kill you
on the spot.
