Two year olds love to build and knock things down. I think an ideal gift would be a couple of sets of those corrugated, red building blocks. I don't know what they're called, but Sears, Penny's and KB Toys have carried them in the past. They are sturdy, but light weight and great fun into the ages of 5 and6.
Another couple of ideas: Lincoln Logs--lots of them. And the big Legos--lots of them!

a kitchen is perfectly appropriate for a boy
i dont understand why people say stuff like that is inappropriate
in this day and age men cook just as much as women
the gender lines are blurring and it's definatly a good thing
aside from that most of the great chefs of the world are male
however i do agree that you should get seperate gifts
if they were living together for quite some time or married then i would say go for it but as everybody else said what if something happens
obviously your niece would keep the toy but it's really unfair
since you are on a college budget try going to walmart or toysrus during a big sale
maybe get them something they can do together but that is still seperate gifts
like craft kits that are age appropriate or finger paints

I agree with daa. If you can't afford the table and chairs, go with a bag full of fun things like paints, markers, crayons, and construction paper. There are some really inexpensive things out there. I am also shopping on a college student's budget and I am doing the same. They love this stuff at that age and it is a great way to have some family fun time. Depending on where you live you could also add sidewalk chalk. My 2 year old nephew just loves the stuff.

Why wouldn't the kitchen be appropriate for a boy? Do men not cook? If the boy's father is single, I'm sure he cooks from time to time. If you can afford it, I think it would be a great idea. Both kids will have a lot of fun with it.

A kitchen is a great idea! My son and daughter have one and they BOTH play with it everyday. When I have other kids over all the boys stand around the kitchen. Just don't get a girly one. There are a lot of kitchens out there that are nuetral.

You really would be better to get two separate presents. Who would take the gift home? The boy or girl? Even if they live together now, what if your sister and boyfriend split up? Two nice teddy bears to nap with would be nice and not to expensive. Different colors of course.

I would not give 1 gift to 2 children that are not related. What about Leap Frog? They are about learning and not to expensive. Little boys like play tools. Just a thought.

My son is 3 and he LOVES his little kitchen. Also, think about their relationship. If you get a present that is for both of them and it doesn't work out who gets it? I would maybe get each their own mess-free color wonder coloring sets. They have princess ones and ones from the movie Cars, etc.

Depending on how much you want to spend. The VTech games for the TV are good. It teaches them colors, shapes, animals, sizes and all of that. I believe more then one child can play at a time as well.
How about the memory game? Twister? Big piece puzzle?
Foam blocks...then they can build forts and building with them. If they get mad at each other and want to throw a block at the other child, it won't hurt either! ..well at least not as much..lol
Good Luck

An American Girl Doll? Or a sewing machine meant for 4 to 5 year olds? I remember I had one when I was that age and I loved it! (:
