im considering buying a ps3, but i heard that the different hard drives offer different things... my main concern is compatability with ps2 games... i was told that the higher gig ps3's play a vast majority of ps2 games, compared to the lower gig ones.. what is true about ps3's and their different hard drives?

This question is an often one, so that's my cut & paste answer:
1). 20GB has no chrome trim, no memory card reader and no wi-fi. Not manufactured anymore. Has the best backwards compatibility with PS2 games due to Emotion Engine (PS2's CPU) and Graphics Synthesizer (PS2's GPU) installed.
2). NTSC 60GB has the same backwards compatibility as 20GB version, also has memory card reader and wi-fi. Has a chrome trim.
3). 80GB - extended memory, but reduced backwards compatibility with PS2 games, it has only Graphics Synthesizer (PS2's GPU). Around 80% of PS2 games can be played. Available only in NTSC regions.
4). 40GB - can't play PS2 games at all (all PS2 chips were removed), has 2 USBs instead of 4, no memory card reader, has wi-fi. Avalable in black and white colors. White is on sale only in Japan. Uses 65nm technology (lower power consumption). Improved cooling system. It's the latest version.
5). PAL 60GB - reduced backwards compatibility with PS2 games. it has only Graphics Synthesizer (PS2's GPU). Around 80% of PS2 games can be played.

The 20 and 60 gb has the most backward compatibility with PS2 games because they have the emotion engine, which was the CPU used to run PS2 games.

The 80 gb uses software emulation to play PS2 games, so there might be some games that aren't playable on the PS3 until programmers write the software emulation for it.

The 40 gb cannot and will not play PS2 games, but it will play PSX games.

Besides the backward compatibility, the 40 gb only has 2 USB ports instead of 4, and it doesn't have the 3 flash drives.

The 20 gb has 4 USB ports, but it's missing the flash drives, and it doesn't have built in Wi-Fi.

get the one with 80 gb, it is the best, i recently brought one and it plays 90% of the ps2 games, i think in future the compatibility will reach to 100% with new software updates.

ps 3 in the us now took out the compatability to play ps 2 games just make them cheaper. i think it is because of money but it really does not have anything to do with the harddrive. it all matter is when it was made
