If not, was Joseph gay?

You think that Joseph put up with all that ridicule and shame, to stay a virgin for the rest of his life?? I am sure that he got plenty! Even if he was gay, he got himself some just to make a point, and continued to make babies in order to assert his manhood! he could have been gay, but so could anyone... He might have dabbled a little, with one of the shepard boys??

Mary was conceived and born without sin, She gave birth to Jesus even though She was a Virgin. She remained a virgin for the remainder of her life. As there is no mention of Joseph in the later years of Jesus one must assume that he had died earlier, though how much earlier is not known. As Mary remained alone (or given refuge by the Apostles and other friends) for the remainder of Her life, one can also infer that there were NO siblings, since it was the custom of that day for the eldest son (or other living relative) to assume the care of a widowed Mother. Joseph was an older man when they (He and Mary) were wed, and I am sure he found more than enough comfort in just the knowledge that HE was the caretaker of Gods' Son!

I think the person asking the question either hasn't actually read much of the Bible, and/or, judging by the other Yahoo questions he's asked, already knows the answer and is trying to get a reaction from Christians and Catholics, to get them to think about this one-of-many weird differences between the Bible, and what some Catholics believe. Technically, non-Catholic Christians don't believe Mary was a virgin all her life, but many religious people who call themselves one thing or another, believe in some things that other denominations call their own--it's the salad bar approach to religion--a little of this over here, a little of that over there.

Either way, his point is valid: as others point out here, many people, including Catholic faithful, believe Mary was a virgin all her life, even though the Bible specifically states that she "had union" with Joseph after Jesus was born, and states that he had actual biological brothers. Nowhere in the Bible is it even hinted that Mary was a virgin all her life. This was an invention some time later, dreamed up by that weird bunch of "thinkers" whose odd beliefs later became Catholic orthodoxy, because it made Mary sound "more holy".

This question points out the schizophrenic nature of much of the Christian/ Catholic/ etc. belief system--things they believe, that either aren't in their Bible, or which are specifically described differently. Odd for a religion that demands that their Bible is the literal word of God, with every word being true. Self-delusion has been described as being of some survival value, but some Catholics (as well as some Muslims, other religionists, and many non-religionists too) carry it to a high art, separating parts of their mind from other parts so facts don't manage to rub up against each other in an inconvenient fashion.

How is it anyone can actually take this story to be true? It is biologically impossible. Therefore it just goes to show that the whole book is just a bunch of wildly imagined stories. Now that we have so much more knowledge it just doesn't make sense to live by a book of threatening stories to keep us in line. By now we should have enough sense to know how to live right or leave. I'm sorry but I just don't get it! If the bible were of real stories then wouldn't it still be an ongoing novel? Have the miracles of God stopped after the bible was written? If not, where are it's sequels? I think we all crawled out of the ocean and adapted and evolved to fit our surroundings. Don't be offended, it's just what I've come to believe.

The Holy Scriptures even show that Mary and Joseph had normal marital relationships after the birth of Jesus.
"When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. But he had no union with her until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus." (Matthew 1:24,25)
Notice the words "no union with her until . . " In everyday language it means "they didn't make sweet love to each other until Jesus was born"

No she did not. Recall her response to the Angel Gabriel when she was told that she'd have a son, "How can this be, since I do not know man?". Now, since she was bethrothed at the time to Joseph, that would be a strange question to ask, unless she was a CONSECRATED virgin, since she would just assume that Joseph would be the father. At that time, it was not uncommon for there to be people who were concerated, or took a vow of chastity, to be in total service to God. Sometimes, these people might marry, in a chaste relationship, an older man so they could be taken care of and help take care of the household. So, it's likely that the "brother and sisters" refered to in the Gospel were step-children, or they could have been Jesus' cousins since the Greek word used "roughly" transaltes to brothers and sisters, though probably more like "kin". Also, if Mary had additioal children, why would Jesus entrust her to John as he is dying on the cross? "Woman, behold your son, son behold your mother". If she had other children, he would not have asked John to take her in as he did. Now, it's important to put this in context. She is not a perpetual virgin because sex in marraige is somehow dirty, but because she was in a sense married to God, since God was Jesus' father. Mary is sometimes refered to as Mary, the daughter of God, the Father, Mother of God, the Son, and Spouse of God, the Holy Spirit, reflecting the Trinitarian nature of God, 3 yet one.

Yes, I believe Mary and Joseph's marriage continued along the normal vein after Jesus' Birth (Mat. 1:25). The Bible does, after all, mention Jesus' brothers.

Mat. 12:46 While he yet talked to the people, behold, his mother and his brethren stood without, desiring to speak with him.
Mat. 12:47 Then one said unto him, Behold, thy mother and thy brethren stand without, desiring to speak with thee.
Mat. 12:48 But he answered and said unto him that told him, Who is my mother? and who are my brethren?
Mat. 12:49 And he stretched forth his hand toward his disciples, and said, Behold my mother and my brethren!
Mat. 12:50 For whosoever shall do the will of my Father which is in heaven, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother.

Their marriage was not a marriage of convenience, either. Joseph did not decide to marry her only after it became known that she was pregnant. It was quite the contrary. Joseph was already about to marry her when she told him she was pregnant (Mat. 1:18). At that point, Joseph did not want to embarrass her, by making it public, so he was going to dissolve the engagement quietly (Mat. 1:19). In a dream, an angel told him not to (Mat. 1:20) -- and there we have the rest of the story.

God bless.

Depends on who you ask. Protestants believe Mary and Joseph had normal sexual relations after Jesus was born. Catholics believe Mary was a perpetual virgin. That she never had sex. They believe she had devoted herself to be a perpetual virgin and Joseph was a much older man who married her in order to protect her when she became pregnant.

We know so little about Joseph. But early Church tradition says he died at some point and that Mary lived and was supported by the Apostle John after Christ ascended to Heaven. The folks who knew them believed she remained a virgin.
Many people do live celibate lives (I am not one of them) but they do and are quite happy about it regardless of sexual orientation.
