If you don't know where insert key is you can also go to the "Tools" tab, then go down to options. When the box comes up, click the tab that says "Edit" and uncheck the box that says "Overtype mode". This happens to me all the time at school, it is very annoying.

The Insert key is a toggle - press for ON, press for OFF.
You must have accidentally hit it. It is easy to do as it it just above the delete key.

Press it and see if this does it for you.
