Tell her to use a very heavy conditioner like Cholesterol by Sally Hanson--it is about $3.99 for a jar. She should PLASTER it on her head--every hair, down to the scalp. Then wrap with Seran Wrap or put on a shower cap and leave it for at least 4 hours then shampoo. This will smother the headlice. It is also easier to comb out the nits. Use a comb called the LiceMeister--about $10 at the pharmacy. She'll need to comb out every day for 10 days. Of course, she'll need to wash the sheets and pillowcases, vacuum the matress, etc before putting on clean sheets. Get new pillows, a new hairbrush, and hair assessories. Bag anything that can't be washed such as dolls, etc on the bed. Sweaters and Jackets should be washed or taken the the dry cleaners. Everyone in the house needs to be treated at the same time or she'll never be clear.
As a school nurse for 15+ years, I consider myself somewhat of an expert on headlice--lol

Depending where the lice is...?
Head - Use dog flea & tick shampoo. (Repeat every 3 - 5 days - so you catch the ones that newly hatch for 2 weeks!)
Using the nit/lice comb, comb through white conditioner every day for a few weeks! (You'll use a lot of conditioner so use a really cheap one!)
Repeat shampoo on the 3rd week!
Down Below - See a doctor, then shave it off and use whatever treatment the doctor prescribes

5 years!? WTF!
Shave all body hair. Toss out unneeded bedding and clothing. Sanitize all others. Totally clean that house. Wash with RID and use similar products on any pets. Get a new matress.
Seriously, 5 years!?

shave all body hair. Seriously.
How do you go 5 years? Dear God....Are you sure you dont have them too?
She needs to boil all hairbrushes/combs. Throw out all sheets/pillows. Shampoo/RID all furniture and carpet.
Better yet. Move. Get all new furniture. Start a new life as a happy, peppy bald person.
