1. Be civil. Always. No matter what the verbal provocation.
2. Do not talk about that person with others outside of official capacities.
3. If you know you are going to disagree with that person over something that must be discussed, request that a supervisor, teacher, or other neutral party mediate.
4. Schedule a few moments of personal mental health time after dealing with this person in order to maintain internal equanimity. Find a brief meditation, thought, poem, image, or whatever that brings you peace.

Um............ the only one I'd have to associate with everyday would be my siamese twin and we'd get surgery.
I have a girl I really disliked and actually made her cry which made me feel slightly better b/c she really is a biotch.
But otherwise, if you steer clear from religious philosophy and try to look at psychology or science. Understand it as a type of personality disorder, family conflicts that causes it, maybe gender issues, or probably self esteem issues, a dark self, etc. It is probably their own insecurity. I'm no expert in this field and ain't acting like one, but I assure you that it worked for me. Maybe that will change your hostility into pity. That way, you are the bigger person.
Oh, and if he/she's your enemy: don't try to make him/her cry. That's just mean.

yeah, i would have to agree with that first guy. if you treat them as if you aren't enemies and that you have no problem with him/her, the tension usually goes away.
