My husband got an assignment to D.C. over a year and a half ago. We were suppose to leave in August but his orders are constantly being pushed back, which has left us in limbo for a very LONG period of time. We don't know if we are staying or going and it is starting to effect our personal lives. We told our landlord we would be moving and he's getting ansy...with each deadline passing his orders still hasn't been dropped. He keeps trying to get some information on the assignment but everyone keeps saying it is out of their hands. What can we do, it is really stressful!?

And yes his chain of command has been involved.

Sounds like my situation a year ago. Not sure what branch you are in but the AF was having money problems when it came time to PCS folks (they ran out of money to move people) Again not knowing what branch you're in I'd suggest have him talk to the highest enlisted person in his unit then make you're way up to the highest enlisted guy on the base. Then you can always have him contact the Personnel Center for the AF it's in Texas and see what they can do. Another route is to contact the unit where you are supposed to be going to, see if they can pull strings or start yelling that they need your husband ASAP to the powers that be. This was my case when trying to get to Andrews. And yes it was very stressful on my wife and I.

As for your landlord, is there anyway you can go month to month on your lease, even offering an extra $50 in rent may sway him. Or you can move into a new apartment / rental and get a military clause in the new contract that way if your orders drop right after you move in you wont have to pay a penalty to move out, I know this is a total hassle. We sold our house and were homeless for three months while we waited for my orders to go through, we put all of our stuff in storage and bounced around from friend to friend depending on who had room that week / month. We never got reimbursed for our stuff that was in storage since we did that without orders (big Catch-22) but they did at least come to get it from there when everything started to fall into place.

Hope you get an answer soon. Have you guys started looking around to see where you want to live out here in DC? Lots of choices contact me if you want any recommendations.

The chain of command being involved doesn't necessarily tell me anything because his chain could be interpreted as his direct supervisor all the way to the President of the United States. For the United States Air Force, one could technically place a call to the Air Force Personnel Center Assignments Branch, although they don't like for you to do that because it's jumping the chain. You've got two options really...continue up the chain until someone pays attention to your request, or shut up and color. Your choice...

Did he get in contact with his branch manager?

Before I left Korea the military kept messing with my orders. I finally got hold of my branch manager and they said I had a code by my name for some BS reason. The couldn't tell me what the code was or anything. My chain of command couldn't really help. One trip to JAG and I had orders that week. So if all else fails with the branch manager get a hold of JAG.

the question is WHY have his orders not come through yet? is there a Medical hold, a Clearance issue, what? is there something in his jacket that prevents him form being released by his CoC like a LOR or Mast?

has he gotten on his Detailer's butt and bugged him to get orders cut?

Its called Bureaucracy and it happens. My cousin was supposed to be deployed to Kuwait 5 different times before he ended up leaving. It gets frustrating.
