I got renters insurance the day I moved into my first apartment - never know what can happen. I would never go without. I own my home now so of course I have homeowners insurance. Also, some companies offer a discount on the auto policy when you have a renters policy with them. Sometimes the discount on the auto is just as much as the cost of the renters policy so in essence, you are getting that coverage for free, or close to for free.
Considering a possible claim payout (say you leave a pot burning on the stove & you cause several hundred thousand dollars damage to the building - plus all your own stuff) I think it is the best bargain out there.

When I was a renter I had it.

I paid $110.00 a year for $10,000 worth of coverage. Then I came home from work one day to find a cold water pipe in the ceiling burst and my apartment was flooded by 4 inches of water. The apartment complex found the water well before I did and had taken quick action to get my items out and pull the carpet up. My renter's insurance paid about $6,000 to pack all of the items out of my apartment - clean them and put them in a storage unit. I was moving out of state at the end of the month so I did not have them pack my belongings back to the apartment (but they would have paid for that up to my coverage limit).

Highly recommend renters.

What really tears me up is the folks you see on the nightly news, their rent house just burned to the ground and they are asking for donations and setting up accounts to help at local banks.......and for less than the cost of a DVD per month!

Wise choice you made! I hope you never need to use it!

I have it. I like knowing I won't be up a spit creek if something happens and all of my belongings are destroyed. :)
