A Marriage License is an application TO GET LEGALLY MARRIED. You are not married until someone conducts a wedding ceremony (minister, priest, rabbi, judge, or justice of the peace).

The Marriage License tells the person who will be conducting the ceremony that you, the Bride and Groom, have met all the requirements and/or qualifications to be legally married within that state.

The Marriage License is presented to the person conducting the wedding ceremony BEFORE the ceremony begins (state law). A wedding ceremony cannot be conducted without a Marriage License (state law). So, if you do not have a Marriage License, don't even bother going to the church or court house.

A Certificate of Marriage is signed by the person who conducted your wedding ceremony AFTER the ceremony has taken place. A Certificate of Marriage is the Bride and Groom's legal proof of their marriage, and you will need that Certificate of Marriage for military benefits, social security changes, driver's license changes, health insurance and life insurance changes, and apartment or home ownership changes.

A license is a permit from the state to get married. The ceremony must be performed by an authorized party (usu minsiter or judge) AND FILED WIHT THE COURTHOUSE. If both of these events do not occur within the permit the license is valid, the marriage is not valid.

Once the license is recorded it's often treated as a certificate. I give my couples a separate certificate with their ceremony info on it.

Hi. You need to APPLY for a marriage license in your state.
Then, yes, you need to have some kind of legal ceremony. You need to legally be married by someone authorized to do so in your state. In most states that includes members of the clergy (any religion), a judge, or a justice of the peace. You need to have two witnesses SIGN the marriage license, along with the person who officiated. Some couples simply go to the courthouse for a quick ceremony.

After that the marriage license is filed in the court by whomever officiated.

Getting a license and having the certificate are two different things.

Therefore, you would need the license first, then you would be married by an officiant, then you would get the marriage certificate and be legally married

Nope. It has to be executed by a state certified officiant. Each state has different standards, but typically a priest, rabbi, reverend, pastor or judge.

You have to have someone that is qualified through the state to sign it. (i.e. preacher or judge).
