Imagine this, it is afternoon on the day of Ashura. Imam al-Hussain (AS) is standing on the blood-drenched soil of Karbala in the heat of the scorching sun waiting to meet his beloved. His head is wounded and blood is streaming slowly down his holy face soaking his blessed beard. He looks around, searching for members of his family and his companions, only to find them brutally slaughtered and slain like sacrificial lambs, lying there on the ground soaked in blood. He hears the innocent crying and wailing of the children and the women. Tears flow down his holy face. He takes a piece of cloth to wipe the blood from his face, whereupon an archer from the army of Yazid (may Allah’s curse be upon him) shoots a triple-headed arrow, which lodges into Imam al-Hussain’s (AS) heart.

He pulls out the arrow causing blood to gush out. The Holy Imam is thirsty, he cries: “O God, I am thirsty”, in the meantime another man approaches and shoots an arrow which thrusts into Imam al-Hussain’s (AS) throat quenching his thirst. Hilal bin Nafi’ was reported as saying: “By God I never saw a person getting killed with his own blood all over his body in a better state than al-Hussain. I was so overwhelmed by the radiance of his face that I refrained from contemplating killing him”. Even when the accursed Shimr approached Imam al-Hussain (AS) to severe his blessed head, he said: “When I approached Hussain ibn Ali and my eyes fell on him, the light of his face so gripped me that I forgot my intention to kill him”. It is reported that when Imam al-Hussain was killed, the sky rained down blood. It has been recorded that Imam Ja’far as-Sadiq (AS) has said:

“…For no one the heavens wept for forty days save Yahya and Hussain…”

Show me such a spectacle of human greatness in an event other than Karbala and I will commemorate its memory instead of Karbala! How can someone hear all this and not cry and mourn, even those who are not Muslims shed tears when they hear this tragedy. Even the heavens wept for Imam al-Hussain (AS). Let me ask you a question, if a Muslim cries over the passing away of their own relatives, then how can they not cry over the grandson of the Messenger of Allah (SAW)?

The Tragedy of Karbala was no ordinary tragedy and Imam Husayn was no ordinary revolutionary for he was the grandson of the holy Prophet of Islam, Muhammad. For oppressed communities worldwide regardless of religion, gender or race, the tragedy of Karbala forms a model, a benchmark. Karbala signifies a lesson that human beings should never submit to tyranny, oppression and falsehood. Silence in the face of transgression is synonymous to the acceptance of injustice.

Husayn's heroism set a firm standard against despotism forever. It sent a message to all corners of the world that although he was finally massacred in battle; he and his most loyal companions were victorious. It was in the name of Husayn that the oppressive government he fought was toppled some 70 years following his death, and the true Islamic teachings of peace, justice and submission to God exists today.

The tragedy of Karbala is a reminder not only for Muslims, but for mankind to rise up to seek positive reform in the face of resignation.

Thomas Carlyle, a 19th century Scottish historian said, "The best lesson which we get from the tragedy of Karbala is that Husayn and his companions were the rigid believers of God. They illustrated that numerical superiority does not count when it comes to truth and falsehood. The victory of Husayn despite his minority marvels me!"

Mahatma Gandhi - Said: “I learned from Hussain how to be wronged and be a winner.”

I do not agree with cutting or hitting my self so as many other scholers, but the ones that do it, will not make them non muslims sorry i cannot agree with you. it is like me saying all sunnah are salafi, and salafi are not Muslims, i know they are muslims for a fact just as i know anyone that says he believes in Allah and Muhammad is the messenger of God is enough, if it was enough for abu suyfien to do it, the biggest enemy of islam, then who am i to say no, do you know how many wanted to rip abu suyfian guts open; who stoped them the prophet, if you follow the sunnah as you say follow the prophets actions even my 6 year old knows this story don't you

All of the Sahaba are of The best of generations and therefore should be respected.

The grandsons of Prophet Muhammad (saws) are from the Sahaba. They are also of the family (relatives) of Prophet Muhammad (saws).

All of those who are of Ahl Al-Bayt (people of the home/ relatives of Prophet Muhammad (saws) ) need to be treated with kindness. In a hadith/saying of Prophet Muhammad he asked ALL Muslims to be respectful and kind to his relatives.

I have a question for those Muslims who consider themselves to be Shi'a. If a great, great, great grandson of Prophet Muhammad came to you and asked you to follow The Sunneh of Prophet Muhammad (saws)...would you?

I wasn't there to know who is right and who is wrong, but I agree with you about Hussein (r). But i don't think that any Muslim should cut themselves or hurt themselves in any way (since the Quran specifically says that we can't do this) in memory of this tragedy. We don't need to do that to remember the great sacrifice that the grandson of Prophet Muhammed (saaw) did.

I didn't say that. I'm just saying that it's something makroh (not encouraged) by the Quran, if someone does it that doesn't mean they're not Muslims! And, of course, we should be grieved by the death of the grandson of Prophet Muhammed (saaw.) The best way to show this is to work at uniting the Muslims, just like he would have wanted.

Believe the Hype, I believe that there is a mourning period in islam and it is 30 days, right? We can't mourn someone FOREVER. And what will our crying do for Hussein (R), he is in heaven with God and he is not affected by our crying or our sympathy.

To Allah we belong and to Him do we return. (2:156)

Who is saying that the asker posted a garbage ? May Allah Forgive you. Instead of listen the point, you are saying that the greatest story of Martyrdom is a lie ? May Allah give guidence to the people.

The asker point is challengable to all Muslims i.e if a person cries over the passing away of their own relatives, then how can they not cry over the grandson of the Messenger of Allah (SAWW) ,eventhough all the prophets (A.S) of Allah have done it when Allah told them about that?

Isn't it a sensitive question?

Well said, B.

And Mahatma Gandhi said the sentence you posted before about prophet Mohammed salawatullahi aleihi wa salam, and then some Shia twisted it to say about Hussein. What a liar you are, you deleted the link when someone sent you the real quotes of Gandhi.

I respect imam Hussein r.a., but i think commemoration of his death is unnecessary,as it is unnecessary to commemorate anyone's death.

It is forbidden for Muslims to slap ourselves and tear our clothes as a sign of grief.

You should remember battles of Badr, Uhud, Kheiber, Honein, Tabuk... And how the great sahabah conquered the Majusi kingdom of Persia, for what grandsons of Kisra and Hulagu, are still angry.

Remember the last stand of Abdullah ibn Zobeir in Mekka against Hajjaj, who find no wrong in attacking the holy city.

Imam Hussein radhiallahu anh is far from what some sects ascribe him, he was a noble man and would never be pleased to be taken as an object of worship.

I sent Gandhi's statement that you previously ascribed to be about imam Hussein r.a.

Slapping and hitting doesn't make them non-Muslims, but making dua to Hussein and Ali, and calling Hussein god, and "la ilaha illa Fatima" does. And allowing pedophilia also.

What do you think of Tahrir Ul-Vasiyeh?

the hitting and cutting is done by the extremist shii's, and people have generalized it to "all shiaa's"
nevertheless, thank you for this post. It is always nice to be reminded of the sacrafice that this noble Imam had done for Islam.
