I am trying to find a Lutheran church to go to in my area. The problem is, is that I am from a church that was MLEA - apparently, there is different denominations within the Lutheran religion...I'm so confused. Any help? What are the differences?

There are predominately are 3 Lutheran Church bodies, even though there may be a few splinter groups. The main 3 are, Wisconsin Synod, Missouri Synod and ELCA or Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Without going in to great detail. The Wisconsin Synod is probably the most conservative, then the Missouri Synod. The ELCA has become more and more liberal. I happen to belong to the Missouri Synod. They have very sound doctrine, great Christian schools. I would highly recommend them. I have a problem with the Wisconsin Synod, in that they would not even let me take communion in their church. I could not join the ELCA because they are getting more liberal as time goes by. It would take me an hour to explain the differences. I would highly recommend that you visit any Missouri Synod Lutheran Church and the Pastor will be able to explain the differences...then make your choice. God Bless!

I did some research, and found the MLEA. It's an association of congregations who formed a joint Lutheran school in South Bend, Indiana. (I'm guessing that's where you are originally from??) Anyway, the congregations are mostly Lutheran Church Missouri Synod, LCMS, and the school is LCMS. So... I would suggest finding the local LCMS churches and go from there. You can also use the directory on LCMS.org to find the congregations and perhaps visit their websites.
I know it's hard trying to find a new church home. We do it every 3 or 4 years with the military. Blessings to you!
