If an onion starts to shoot shoots and is ply-able when held firmly as if testing apples and oranges then its no good and way past its best by date. Store in a cool room in the dark if possible, this will allow your onions to stay fresher for longer. As a chief my onions are stored in this way and last for weeks. Try popping them into a brown paper bag before storing.

Well, they won't water your eyes if you put it into the freezer for about 20 minutes. It will take longer in the refrigerator, but that will work as well. If the people are planning on using the onion anyways, it won't go bad in the refrigerator unless they cut up too much. But, if they do, an onion cut in half will last about 6 days in a zip lock bag, about 4 days if cut into smaller pieces and about 20 days if cut and frozen, without taking away from it's flavor. I use onion in almost everything I cook, so I always have them on hand. Good luck with your experiment and try the freezer thing.

The whole thang don't get bad at once. A part of the onion will get soft and dis-color. I myself just remove the soft part and use the good part. 8 days is not too long. the onions I have are 3 weeks old. Do not refrigerate onions. Keep them in a nice dry cool place in the house.

If they were in a cool, dark place, they should be totally fine. If not, then just check to make sure they're not going really soft and don't have an off-smell. You know, they should smell like onions and not like moldy onions or something like that. Happy cooking!

They get soft, occasionally moldy, and occasionally slimey. It's hard to tell when an onion will go bad by the date you bought it. One store in our area has onions that go bad in three days, EVERY time, I swear. Sometimes I get onions that will keep for weeks and weeks.
If they are just soft (not moldy or slimey) they will still work great for cooking. I've eaten them raw when they were soft, and it didn't hurt me, but the texture wasn't too great! lol

An onion under proper conditions can last for months, the way you will know when they are bad is by them turning soft, turning a brownish color, feeling slimey, they often have a musty smell to them also.
A good onion will be firm crisp and will be juicey and sting your eyes when you slice it.

it will feel soft, slimy. If cut open it will be mushy and such. onions can sit around for a long time. working in pizza shops we'd have 50# bags of them stacked 4-6 tall, and use them over weeks.

It gets soft and more on the mushy side. Some even get moldy. You can really smell it. Onions keep pretty well for quite awhile.
