Or do you require their respect first?

I respect everyone..but it's more of a civil kindness than it is a full out level of respect. People have to earn the actual respect.

No, I definitely don't require respect first. I'll get their respect if they get to know me. I'm always respectful first, and usually second. Once you're disrespectful to someone, it's very difficult to go back to being respectful to them, so err on the side of caution. Plus, people are often more deserving of my respect than I initially think they're going to be.

I never *automatically* respect anyone, and I don't expect automatic respect in return.

respect has to be earned. the best way to earn it (IMHO) is to demonstrate that you are educated - or knowledgeable - on the subject you are talking about, and that the opinions you hold are derived from a sincere search for truth, study and experience. (not just because "that's how it is")

the best way to lose my respect is to demonstrate entirely the opposite. to pontificate on a subject when it's obvious you know nothing about it - or you're just repeating what you read or heard from somewhere.

that happens a lot, unfortunately. zero respect there - because an opinion is only truly your own if you have come to it the hard way.

I was raised to be respectful, and I try to remain so even during the most difficult moments. I don't always succeed, but I give it my best.

I don't require that others show me respect first.

I was raised to be respectful to others as I was growing up and to turn the other cheek as well yet I now believe that if you start disrespecting me I have my limits also and if you slapped my cheek you don't ever again get anymore of my cheeks as they are off limits until that person can gain and honest trust back from me then maybe. I agree that respect is a 2 way Street and it is not going to be to me going that street when it turns ONE WAY.

I always try to be respectful of others, but of course I can't be all the time. I never require anyone's respect first...I think that sometimes it's possible to hurt someone's feelings without even intending to.

Not always. I require respect.

I come from the old school. Please, Thank you, Mam. Sir, Excuse me or Pardon me. I don't think these words are used that often any more. I still try my very best to be respectful whether people are respectful towards me or not. I remember only too well my moms hand when I wasn't. And it hasn't worn off yet.

If they are my age then I require their respect first lol, but I always respect people older than me even if they are wrong. Tehehe.

I am always respectful of others regardless of how they treat me. My treating others with respect is a part of my character, not theirs. I try to lead by example rather than reciprocation. If someone treats me rudely, I tell them how sorry I am that they can't treat me with respect. Then I leave. I don't yell at them, talk over them to drown out what they are saying. I simply excuse myself and leave. If they follow me, yelling at me or whatever, I leave the area. If they try to physically attack me, I defend myself with the least amount of force possible to stop them. But I don't yell or belittle them. I ignore them. You'd be surprised how quickly people calm down when they can't get a rise out of you. It's amazing.
