In my bible (kjv) it says God SAID let there be light, and there was. It says he caused the earth to come up from the water. It says he created the birds plants, animals, etc etc.
But why does it give the recipe for man? One could assume he spoke all the other things into creation, but why did he need something else to make us? Why was earth so integral? Why did he breath life into man, instead of just speaking?

Wow. So many people have no idea what I'm talking about. I KNOW we're made in his image. I'm questioning why we had to be formed with dirt. Is He dirt then?

What a wonderful question! I have never heard asked like this before.
There are TWO accounts of creation in the book of Genesis, the first story is the one (Gen. Chapt.1) In verses 26 and 27 it says God spoke and said let us make man, and he then made man in his image; male and female he created them. No mention of breath or dirt. Adam and Eve and then Gods rest after declaring it all good at the end of the sixth day. We are created like everything else save for being made in God's image, men and women on the sixth day.

In the second account in Chapter 2 we read in verse 7 that God made man out of the dust and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life. In this account it appears that after God made Adam he then made all the animals (verse 19) and then after that created Eve (verse 21 -24)

Two ancient creation poems/myths woven together. Up until chapter 2, verse 3 the word used for God is Elohim, the Hebrew name for Deity, a plural noun. But beginning after Chapter 2 in verse 4 the name Jehovah or Lord is introduced and used for several chapters.

Each of God's Creations, of which the Milky Way is just one of a hundred (see parable of the Lost Sheep out of the Ninety and Nine), are designed for (center around) the particular intelligent species which is to inhabit that Creation and to be on a personal level with the Creator. Thus, He spoke the other parts of our Creation into existence but He took more care when it came to Creating Man. He gave us a more Personal Touch.

Some of the responses here have got it wrong, though. God did not breathe His Spirit into us, He breathed the Breath of Life into us (Gen. 3:19; Psalms 104:29). God also did not give us a soul, He made us a living soul (Gen. 2:7; 1Cor. 15:45). The other creatures are also living souls (Rev. 16:3).

God bless.

You have to remember that the bible is a gaint book of metaphors. It is like that so that we can understand it easier. Also you must remember that over the last few centuries, esspecially from the hebrew to the king james, the bible has changed in many ways. But alas we get back to the question, like people above have said it is a metaphor to show how much God actually cares for us, since he was willing to take the time to personnally create us and do it himself instead of ust telling it to be so.

Now, just as then, the LORD wants to have a hands on relationship with humans which is why He made us - then, of course, He also gave man free will because Love cannot be forced and He is ever the Original Gentleman!!

This is just my opinion, but I would imagine that God spending the time to craft man out of dust shows that He wanted a creature He could call His own. It takes more "time" to make a thing, then it does to speak of it, and if it's one thing God wants, it's time with us.

Note also that man is the only being God breathed His own spirit into. Talk about awesome!

His spoken Word was the foundation for our creation.

Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground."
