Well there is that whole Disaster thing- but really it is more of a self sufficiency thing. Not only are we encouraged to have a year supply of food water and supplies, but we are also encouraged to have an emergency fund and to not get into unnessacry debt. When we do have to get into debt we should be wise about it and only get what we need. Houses, cars and schooling are examples of debt for things we need, but we don't need luxurious home or cars, just what is right for our needs. And keep the payments where we can afford. Then we work to pay off those debts as soon as we can.

I can tell you from experience that living those principles really makes a difference when you are in a bind. Whatever that situation may be. If I had been better about paying off my debts I would be in a much different situation today. I have learned and I am smarter because of it and budgeting better and now I can see a way out of my problems. I have not been able to get a food storage built up because I have just been able to get just enough for now, but that is changing and when I go shopping, I am able to get a little extra each time.

I remember my grandma talking about living during the depression and how they would just on purpose "happen" to show up at friends house right at dinner time. They would always be invited to join in the meal and that is the only way that they could eat and get food for them and my uncle who was the baby. A food storage would prevent someone from that kind of desperation. They would have it there and not have to rely on others. In fact maybe they could invite others to join them.

Many people equate the storage with major disasters, but it is really for the more personal crisis. I mean if your home is destroyed during a disaster, it won't help you. The wise spending habits that come with it and the preparedness attitudes that come with it will help. Really I think it is more for the personal Crisis or financial crisis, things like that.
It really just makes good sense to have a supply of food in case something happens, be it loosing your job or the grocery store blowing up.

Lots and lots of people are interested in disaster preparedness. The fullness of the Mormon reasons cannot be explained here. However, the Mormon Church does place a big emphasis on preparedness and personal responsibility. When a disaster hits, it is often three or more days before the emergency assistance gets up and running effectively in an area. A Mormon family might never need to use their food storage, but one never knows what will happen. They want to be able to feed their neighbors as well. There is a verse in the scriptures that says "If ye are prepared, ye shall not fear." This is good advise both spiritually and temporally.

With every day pass, our country is getting into more and more trouble. The inflation, unemployment and falling value of dollar are the main concern for our Government but authorities are just sleeping, they don’t want to face the fact. Media is also involve in it, they are force to stop showing the real economic situation to the people. I start getting more concern about my future as well as my family after watching the response of our Government for the people that affected by hurricane Katrina.

According to recent studies made by World Bank, the coming crisis will be far worse than initially predicted. So if you're already preparing for the crisis (or haven't started yet) make sure you watch this video at http://www.familysurvival.tv and discover the 4 BIG issues you'll have to deal with when the crisis hits, and how to solve them fast (before the disaster strikes your town!) without spending $1,000s on overrated items and useless survival books.

Mormons are counseled by their leaders to be self-sufficient. In the event of a job lay-off, or illness or disability, the idea would be that they (the Mormons who have followed this counsel) would be able to live off of their preparations to see them through those difficult times. Then, when a new job is found, or the disability overcome, they could again be working and setting aside the next batch of food storage.

Likewise, if there is a natural disaster like an earthquake, flood, etc, the Mormons would be able to be self-sufficient to overcome those challenges as well.

Mormons across the world have donated food storage, and other goods to areas of the world that have had disasters. For a Church that is considered by some to be non Christian, Mormons are the most Christian church I know of.

And yes, they are indeed Christian

I live in a city where there is really only one major regular route that food and other things come. It has apopulation of about 200,000 people. The route is over a mountain pass that regularly receives snow during the winter. A few years ago, we received a record snow storm and stores began to run out before supplies made it by another, much longer route.

A friend's family went through a tough time, with both parents unemployed for an extended period of time.

In both cases, food and water storage came in handy. Disasters happen all the time. They are not always extreme. It is best to be prepared for them.

Storing food for a personal crisis is more the point. Such as job layoffs, illness, etc. I have often said it would not help in a world disaster as people like MioOMya would just rip you off. Steal your food. People would kill for it.

Actually we are preparing for disasters. Not only this, but the LDS church is very active in providing disaster relief throughout the world. Often they beat government aid when getting there.

Members are encouraged to be prepared for disasters by having food storage, this is also helpful if a family falls on economic hard times and can use the storage to support themselves. It is a good plan for everyone.

More are preparing than the Mormons. Red Elk, 1 of the most high Medicine men for the Natives of North and South America gave a speech last year in June. He said, " You have one year to prepare, go! ". Most Natives are shutting down what they are doing and are stocking and preparing.

It’s time to stop the evil before the 3rd shaking
of the planet. There is a storm before you that
claps silent thunder and blows no wind.

Do you not feel it? The birds have for their
songs have changed . . . warning us, Listen

Not just Mormons do that. But if my Mormon neighbors do it, I know where I'm going when disaster hits.
