The .30-06 Springfield & .270 Winchester (same parent case, the .30-06) are great calibers. They will serve you well for anything from gator to hog to deer. As to brand, I assume you mean rifle brand? Can't go wrong with the Remington.
For hog I bought a Remington 673 Guide rifle in .350 Remington Magnum. This caliber was recently resurrected by Remington and it is the original short-magnum. The 673 is available in .308 Winchester as well. The .308 is ballistically similar to the great old .30-06. Look into this new Guide rifle from Remington. I think you'll be impressed. Then decide on the caliber. It is available in 6.5 Remington Mag, .350 Remington Mag, .308 Winchester & .300 Remington SA (short-action) Ultra Mag. Any will work well on gators and hogs. The price is just under a thousand bucks. It is based on the excellent Remington #7 rifle and features a laminated stock, ventilated rib and is a handsome, compact and rapid to deploy rifle. The 22" barrel allows the calibers to more fully realize their full potention. I own both the 6.5 Remington Magnum and the .350 Remington Magnum.
Funny story, first time I shot the 6.5 Mag. (also one of the original short-magnums) I killed a mesquite tree. Now I have nothing against mesquite trees, mind you, we were just trying it out. My bro-in-law set a target against a mesquite tree about as big around as a 2 liter coke bottle. As I fired we noticed that the tree literally shook. I'd hit the target but the 120 grain 6.5 bullet went through-&-through not only perferating the paper target but opening up a hole in the mesquite that you could shove a 12 oz coke bottle clean through. Yeah, this round is also plenty for hog or gator.
Best.

I am a huge fan of .30-06 and feel it or the .308 are the best all around hunting round . As far as the weapon I would say if you want a dependable and good looking functional weapon I suggest the best value is the Remington 700. If instead you are concerned only with a very dependable functional weapon and are going to "use and Abuse it", I recommend the Savage 110 with some good optics on top.
Should be able to get both the 110 and optics for instance for the same price the 700 will cost alone. Many other good shooters out there too and I am sure you will get many people who suggest one or another, but both of the two above will do everything you need and have very satisfactory accuracy too.
Good luck over there and keep that head down. Good hunting when you get back!

Hogs tend to spend most of their time around or in the thick stuff, so you may want to consider a shorter, handier rifle like the Remington 700 Mountain or even the Model 7 or the similar compact Ruger. Any decent caliber from 260 Remington on up to 338 Federal will do. My favorites being a fellow southerner are 7mm Mauser and 7mm08, since we don't have anything that needs more, but if you want 30-06 nobody's going to be critical. And being an old veteran, I want to thank you for your service.

In order:
Winchester Model 70
Browning BLR
Browning A-Bolt
Ruger Model 77
I prefer the .308 Win over the .30-'06, and I like the .358 Winchester better than either of the other two. The .358 Win is available only in the Browning BLR. My .358 BLR is the most accurate rifle I've ever owned, and one of the most accurate I've ever shot.

30-6 and .270 are very common models that work well for deer hunting, I have never been hog or gator hunting(Wisconsin). and the ammo is relatively cheap. a .243 model also works well with a little less knock-down power but shoots very flat and accurate.
