Depends. If break the laws, go to terrorist sponsoring countries, or go with no documentation, then yes. If you just go sight-seeing, it probably won't be a problem, it will just take longer to get because of verification.

The biggest thing on the security clearance is being honest and upfront the first time you submit your paper work. If you add something during the interview, then you really mess up the process.

The only time this could complicate matters is if you a) traveled into a country we do not have diplomatic relations with and/or 2) you are going for one of the very top level clearances. At that point, they would want information about everyone you know, especially overseas. If you stay with someone (or even rent a place from someone) be sure to keep all the contact info where you can find it. Keep a record of where you were, how you got there and how long you stayed. Keep a list of the places you stayed. When you enlist and they ask about security clearance issues, give them all the information you have..this will make it much easier.

It depends on where you go. Definitely stay away from the rogue nations (China, Pakistan, Iran...). I had the same problem. I wanted to visit the Himalayas, but with the coup in Nepal, and China now in control of Tibet, I was pretty much out of luck. Keep thorough records of where you go, and information of any contacts you make because you'll probably be asked for that information.

No doubt, it does complicate matters, but it will not necessarily prevent you from getting a security clearance. My advice is to pick a few friendly nations, and be content. Obviously, the higher the clearance, the more in-depth the investigation will be. Good luck, and I hope everything turns out alright. If you have any more questions, shoot me an e-mail, and I'll try to find some answers for you.

Wont mess it up but may make it difficult and delay your clearance. Depends on where you go, you will have to explain why you went, who did you see, confirm the time frame. And if you mess anything up or recall incorrectly expect a longer delay if not out right denial of your clearance.

What is it you plan on doing, that requires a clearance? Because if its joining the military there's a chance you could see alot of the world without the clearance.

No, it will not mess up getting a security clearance. Just be careful what you during your travel. Keep meticulous records of where you go. If you go to a bar and have a drink, do not leave the drink. If you do, order a new one rather than drinking the original. There have been instances of having the drink tampered with.

Well, that would all depend on what you do and where you go in that year after graduation!

Go to Cuba? I think that would have a negative impact I am sure.

It will make it harder. You will need to account for that time. And the government likes to be able verify your where abouts.
