youu coulda got it otc a few months ago.. they just recently started putting it behind there.

and the high from it.. isnt that weak.
it just doesnt last too long.

Dextromethorphan is so weak, it isn't worth the expense.
It's not nearly as good for cough suppression as codeine, but
we can't get codeine cough syrups in this country (USA) over the counter since people do tend to take it for the narcotic high.
Cough meds like Nyquil contain a high percentage of alcohol.
It's a lot cheaper to just buy beer, wine, or booze if you are old enough. You can make a pretty good cough medicine with whiskey, honey, and lemon - - or other old time home remedy alcohol concoctions that still work, are cheaper, and at least make you feel a bit better from the high while you are down with a cough/cold. OK if you are not working or driving.
I think they still have some codeine in over the counter meds in Canada - - unless that has changed since I last talked with my Canadian friends. Obviously alcohol or codeine abuse and addiction are problems to be avoided, but short term use during a cold is reasonable.

The thing that people are getting "high" on is DXM. It is extremely stupid and can cause all kinds of bad side effects, including a bad "trip". If you have to get high, at least get some real drugs. Man, kids these days, they'll take anything to try and get high. It's pathetic.
