What pistol do you have? Make & model?
If you mean the .44 Special, it is still widely avaiable through many distributors on the web.
If you mean the .44 Schofeld, it is available through several antique cartridge suppliers, many of which have all antique black powder ammo available. Black Hills Co. is just one such.
If you don't know for sure, your best bet would be to take the pistol to a competent firearms dealer, who can identify the caliber for sure, and can either supply the proper round, or inform you as to where to obtain it.

Smith & Wesson does not and has never chambered revolvers for a .44 Short.

They currently manufacture revolvers in .44 RemMag, and .44 S&W SPL (which is 1/10" shorter than the Magnum). In the past, they built revolvers chambered in .44 Russian (which was 1/10" shorter than the .44 S&W SPL), and .44 S&W American (which was 1/10" shorter than the .44 Russian).

IIRC, S&W has not made a revolver chambered for .44 Russian or .44 S&W American since about 1907 or 1908.

Now, which cartridge do you need?

There is no .44 Short current available as a factory load. You have the .44 Special, and the .44 Magnum.

If you mean the .44 S&W short, it's no longer in production, and any remaining factory rounds are valued highly by collectors. If you're looking for ammo to shoot an old revolver, you'll have to make your own handloads, as the only way for new ammunition is forming the brass from the .44 magnum cartridges and 'rolling your own', so to speak.

If you mean 44 S&W American or Russian, you can simply order them from Midway or one of the other large houses on line, though your selection is not going to be great. The Russian especially seems to be making a minor comback thanks to the cowboy action people.
